in 10 Ideals 5 Stars
In this course, Legionnaires will learn how the history and purpose of The American Legion connect to service today. We will look at the Legion’s founding mission, its commitment to remembrance and mutual helpfulness, and the way that national purpose becomes real through local Posts, Squadrons, ceremonies, and community action.
Legion History and Purpose
We will also learn the foundations of the Five-Star Program: Patriotism, Citizenship, Discipline, Leadership, and Legionism. Each point helps members understand how to serve well, participate responsibly, respect the flag and country, follow rules with discipline, and grow into useful leaders within the Legion family.
The Five-Star Program
We will study the 10 Ideals: Patriotism, Health, Knowledge, Training, Honor, Faith, Helpfulness, Courtesy, Reverence, and Comradeship. These ideals are not just words to memorize. They are standards for conduct, service, respect, and responsibility in meetings, activities, and daily life.

The course will guide learners through short lessons, video explainers, knowledge checks, practical reflection, and AI-supported practice questions. The goal is preparation, not automatic approval: learners will build understanding and evidence that officers can review when deciding readiness for recognition.
